James Dalton groans and growls with authoritative control in a voice as full as the beard he currently sports on his MySpace page. A New Jersey native currently residing and recording in Brooklyn and performing sporadically throughout the Northeast, Dalton’s sound is defined by a degree of soulfulness which is maintained through all shades of the emotional spectrum. His light, gently inspiring guitar work often recalls a jolly, reflective grandfather entertaining a bouncing toddler on his knee in some back-country heartland corner far removed from the Tri-State Area. At other times, Dalton moans like a whiteboy afflicted with a sorry case of black and blues contracted late one night at a lonely Jersey shore crossroads; the instantly compelling highlight “Girl of My Regret” slips some smooth slide guitarin’ and touches of harmonica into a full-throated lament. With such a commanding voice and innate feeling for traditional American music, Dalton makes pining for the Garden State sound natural and moving enough to make even Springsteen regret the urge to run away. - Toney Palumbo
